Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a major honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
