British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages leading to the site... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he commented. "Including them were numerous British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
